This course is designed to teach the firefighter candidates the policies and procedures concerning the ordering and transmitting of emergency alarms and the actions to be taken upon receipt of the alarms. FIP-3043; FIREFIGHTER FIREGROUND OPERATIONS 3 (32 hrs.)

This course combines the former courses Building Construction, Fire Behavior, and Portable Extinguishers. The course will enable the firefighter candidate to identify the different types of construction and their reaction during a fire situation and the hazards associated with each. Enable the firefighter to understand and properly choose and use fire extinguishers and gain a basic understanding of fire behavior and the hazards of different fuels.

FIP-3044; FIREFIGHTER FIREGROUND OPERATIONS 4 (32 hrs.)

This course is designed to demonstrate methods of forcing entry into structures utilizing various principles and practices. Students will also learn the fundamentals of Salvage & Overhaul and the basics of how a fire is investigated. This course has two written exams students must successfully pass in order to obtain certification.

This course combines the former Ropes class with Firefighter and Rescue. Students will focus on the basic knowledge of fire service ropes including, types, usages, knots, and maintenance of rope and search and rescue operations at structure fire operations.

FIP-3048; FIREFIGHTER FIREGROUND OPERATIONS 8 (24 hrs.)

This course will provide the firefighter candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate the use of hoses, nozzles, adaptors, and appliances, and to obtain the information needed to conduct an annual service test of fire hose.

FIP-3049; FIREFIGHTER FIREGROUND OPERATIONS 9 (40 hrs.)

This course deals with the extinguishment of a variety of classifications of fires and the use of varied nozzles & appliances extinguishment techniques. This course is comprised of several live fire training scenarios, including vehicle fires, LPG / Flammable Liquids Burns, & Interior structural firefighting in a fixed facility. Students attending this course must comply with NCOSFM policy for participating by meeting the requirements provided in Form 200.14A Live Fire Course Competency Validation Form.

“Students participating in live fire training evolution who have received the required minimum training and prerequisites from other than the authority having jurisdiction shall not be permitted to participate in any live fire training evolution without presenting prior written evidence of having successfully completed the prescribed minimum training to the levels specified in NFPA 1403 Chapter 4.3.1.”

All participants must demonstrate they have completed the minimum requirements by completing NCOSFM FORM 200.14A with the required signatures prior to class. All 200.14A forms must be received by October 7th, 2024.

All participants and instructors will also be required to complete a pre-burn medical fit for duty assessment, as well.

Students must meet minimum age requirements (18 years of age or older).

FIP-3050; FIREFIGHTER RESCUE OPS.1 (28 hrs.)

Today’s firefighters must be able to respond to all types of emergencies and life safety is the priority. Rescuers must be trained in the proper methods of moving patients from various emergencies. Within this course, students will utilize various tools and equipment to gain access to victims, and perform proper carries and drags for different injuries and situations including MVA’s, trench, elevator, and collapse rescue.

FIP-3051; FF FIRE & LIFE SAFETY INITIATIVES (28 hrs.)

This course covers the various types of sprinkler systems, as well as their components and the reliability of automatic sprinkler systems and alarm systems. This new course also includes all functions of a fire and life safety program: inspections, prevention, education, and fire cause determination.

FIP-6413 FF MAYDAY SAFETY & SURVIVAL (24 hrs.)

This certification-related course will present the firefighter candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters Five and Six of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. By using simulated situations, this course focuses on identifying parameters that constitute a mayday call. This class will show firefighters how to overcome the stressful environments during fire and rescue operations they may encounter.

FIP-3556 HAZ-MAT OPERATIONS (40 hrs.)

This course meets OSFM’s training requirement for the Hazardous Materials Level One Responder credential for Fire & Technical Rescue certifications. Course content includes activities needed to perform the following tasks safely and effectively:(1) implement standard operating procedures in the current edition of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook; (2) analyze a hazardous materials/WMD incident;(3) plan an initial response to a hazardous materials/WMD incident;(4) implement the planned response for a hazardous materials/WMD incident;(5) evaluate the progress of the actions taken at a hazardous materials/WMD incident.

**This is an intense fast-paced course… There will be required outside reading & study time. Students are encouraged to begin studying prior to class. A practical exercise will be included.

This certification-related course is designed to give the candidate a basic understanding of emergency medical care procedures as well as all of the information required to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the key requirements of NFPA 1001 and 1006.

FIP-6501 TR RESCUE OPERATIONS (12 hrs.)

This course in rescue operations will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the requirements for pre-planning, scene size-up, and hazards assessment for incidents involving rope rescue. This course will also introduce the Technical Rescuer to applicable standards addressing rope rescue, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), accessory gear, rope software, and rope hardware.

FIP-6509 TR RESCUE EQUIPMENT (6 hrs.)

This course in rescue equipment will introduce the Technical Rescuer (TR) to the operation and function of various tools and equipment commonly used in rescue operations. This course will also present procedures for care, inspection, and maintenance of personal protective equipment, tactical equipment, and apparatus.

FIP-6510 TR ROPES BASICS (12 hrs.)

This course in rope basics will present safe and effective methods of rescue in elevated and below-grade environments using ropes, knots, and rope related equipment. Mechanical advantage, anchors, anchoring techniques, and stress loads will be covered.

FIP-6505 TR HELICOPTER TRANSPORT (6 hrs.)

This course will present general operating and safety guidelines when working with helicopters at emergency scenes for the protection of on- scene emergency providers, flight crews, and the civilian population.

FIP-6508 TR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (9 hrs.)

This course will introduce to the Technical Rescuer (TR) the need for and use of PPE to enable the rescuer to perform his/her duties in a safe and responsible manner. Physical characteristics of rescuers, stress, endurance, and the limitations of equipment will be discussed.

This course will present the correct techniques for the setup, operation, and function of various multiple-point anchor and portable anchor/lifting platform systems used during rope rescue incidents.

FIP-6300 TR WILDERNESS RESCUE TECHNICIAN SERIES
(Block Offering)
(60 hrs.)

This Technical Rescuer (TR) Wilderness block course will present the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the requirements of Chapter 16 (Wilderness) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. This block includes all four required parts of the Technical Rescuer (TR) Wilderness Rescue certification course series This course is delivered as one course or block, (4-5 classes in one course). Students must successfully complete all practical portions and one written exam for the entire series to receive certification credit for this block course.

Equipment: (NCEM Packing List)

  • Comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for the weather and walking through the woods. Students will be spending a lot of time walking regardless of what the weather is.
  • Flashlight / headlamp. Recommend having one that has a red lens or light option for doing the night time navigation exercises.
  • Walking Stick (commercial, broom stick, etc.) This is used for the tracking practical.
  • 8’ x 9’ or 8’ x 10’ tarp. This is for the shelter construction practical. Each student will need 1 tarp and their shelter will be a 2-person shelter.
  • Small pack of some type to carry some water bottles, snacks, and class materials while doing the navigation exercises in the woods.
  • Students will need to bring 2ea. 8’X10’ or 9’ X 10’ tarps , sleeping bag or sufficient blankets to spend the night outdoors, water container(s) (recommend 2 quarts) for field operations, clothing suitable for the weather and being outside in the woods. Boots suitable for the weather, terrain, and walking long distances, 2 flashlights, headlamp, with a multicolor beam such as red to preserve night vision while conducting night time operations. Students can, but are not required to bring a compass or GPS.

FIP-6404 TR WATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN SERIES (Block Offering)

This course will provide the TR student with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters 11 and 12 (surface and swift water) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. This Block course incorporates all 4 courses into one series. All students must successfully pass all required practical skills and a 100 question Written exam.

This transfers as one,” all or nothing” block to the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Students must successfully complete all portions to receive certification credit for this block course.

Equipment: Dry suit preferred, wet suit will work, Type V PFD, water rescue helmet, water boots, gloves, whistle and knife on vest optional.

Individual courses included in this block are Rescue Operations for Vehicle Rescue, Vehicle Anatomy and New Technologies, Stabilization and Extrication Techniques, Large Vehicle Rescue, and Victim Management. FIP-5710 transfers as one block, in its entirety, to the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

This certification-related course is designed to apprise chief officers of the various aspects and complexities surrounding the operations and organization of North Carolina Fire departments. Emphasis will be placed on ratings and inspections, NFIRS reporting, prevention and relief funds, grant programs, basic line of duty death information, various state associations, and an overview of chief officer expectations in North Carolina.

This class will satisfy the 9S insurance inspection criteria as specified by the North Carolina Administrative Code.

NIMS INCIDENT COMMAND SYSTEM ICS-300 (21 hrs.)

This course provides greater description and details of the Incident Command System (ICS) organization and operations, including the application of essential principles and description of air operations. There are five modules: Organization and Staffing, Organizing for Incidents and Events, Resources Management, Air Operations and Incident, and Event Planning.

This course includes a final exam.

DRONE Operations; Preparing For FAA Part 107 (16 hrs.)

This class prepares the remote pilot candidate for the law as and regulations of serving as a commercial drone pilot by preparing you for the FAA Part 107 Pilot Exam. Topics such as weather, airspace, reading aviation sectional charts, navigation, communications, and understanding the 4 airspaces will be covered. FAA requirements dictate if operating a drone for any purpose other than for a hobby, you must possess a FAA Part 107 pilot license and your drone must be registered with the FAA. (This includes search and rescue, damage assessment, traffic reconstruction, overwatch or commercial and residential fires) THIS IS NOT THE FAA PART 107 TEST… This is only a introductory preparatory class towards becoming familiar with the rules and regulations of the FAA.

Fundamentals of SAR-TOPO (16 hrs.)

SAR Topo is used by first responders worldwide to manage incidents of all sizes, whether that be backcountry search & rescue, hurricane & flood response and recovery, or many other uses. The purpose of this course is to walk through how to effectively integrate SAR Topo into all stages of your incident response from start to finish. While this course will focus on multi-operational period searches as an example, the same SAR Topo tools and skills covered can be easily applied to other types of incidents as well.

Prerequisites: Students will need to bring a personal laptop with wireless internet capabilities and create a CALTOPO user account prior to class.

Advanced Wilderness Rescue Rigging Operations ( 20
hrs.)

This course is targeted for those wilderness and rope rigging responders looking for training beyond the basic level. This course will compliment the rescuer’s skills and knowledge in Wilderness Search and Rescue by refreshing existing skill sets and introducing advanced skills in search techniques, lightweight rope rescue, backcountry wilderness patient care, bushcraft and survival skills.

Students must possess basic Search and Rescue knowledge and skills and bring SAR packs and rescue equipment that would be needed for a course of this nature. It is the responsibility of the students to research the expected weather for the area of the course and dress accordingly for the climate..

Equipment: Students should bring Personal PPE – gloves for rope work, helmet, appropriate footwear for hiking and climbing, and appropriate clothes for the weather.

FIP-4705 NORTH CAROLINA RESPONSE RATINGS SYSTEM (20 hrs.)

This class will review the latest information and factors that go into the makeup of the public protection rating of cities and fire districts. The system continues to evaluate three major categories of fire suppression: Fire Department, Emergency Communications, and Water Supply. The class will cover various types of rural water supply with no hydrants from ponds, rivers, creeks, or other static points and how to move the water from the source to the fire. The course also includes the Community Risk Section which recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety, and fire investigation.
